Why I Still Iron My Clothes — Even When No One’s Looking

03/19/2025

I didn't grow up in a house with routines or structure. There wasn't someone standing over my shoulder showing me how to dress, how to carry myself, or how to take pride in the little things. I learned to iron my clothes by watching movies. Old-school characters who looked sharp, stood tall, and seemed like they had it all together. I paid attention. And I picked up the habit on my own.

Back then, I didn't even own a decent iron. But I figured it out. Not because someone told me I had to, but because deep down, I knew that how you show up matters—even when no one's watching.

Today, I still iron my clothes. Even if it's just for a day working from home. Even if I'm not going anywhere important. It's not about looking good for someone else. It's about starting my day with intention.

There's something powerful about taking a wrinkled shirt and pressing it clean. It's a small act of order in a world that doesn't always make sense. And it's one thing I can control, no matter what the day holds.

More than that, it's a discipline.

Ironing reminds me to pay attention to the details. To show respect for myself. To prepare like it matters—because it does. That mindset carries into every area of my life. Whether I'm leading a team, speaking to a room full of professionals, or just trying to be a better dad and husband, that same principle applies: take the time to get it right.

You don't need applause to do things with excellence. You just need a standard.

Ironing is a habit I built in silence. No one handed it to me. And that's why it means even more. It's one of those personal disciplines that says, "I care enough to put in the work, even if no one notices."

And I've learned that how you do the small things often reflects how you handle the big things.

Do you prep when no one's watching?
Do you take care of your space, your work, your people—without needing praise?
Do you hold yourself to a higher standard, even in the quiet moments?

If the answer is yes, that's leadership.

So yes, I still iron my clothes. Not because someone told me to. But because I taught myself to take pride in the process.

Because a well-pressed shirt may not change the world.
But the mindset behind it just might.
