The Soundtrack of My Life: 5 Songs That Got Me Through It
Music has a way of freezing moments in time. A single song can transport you back to a memory, a feeling, or a season in life that shaped you. For me, certain songs are more than just tunes—they're chapters in the story of who I've become.
Growing up wasn't easy. From bouncing between shelters to figuring out how to lead myself before anyone else would, I leaned on music as both a refuge and a reminder that I wasn't alone. Some songs made me feel seen. Others lit a fire in me when I was close to quitting. Together, they became the unofficial soundtrack of my life.
Here are five songs that got me through it:
1. "Simple Man" – Lynyrd Skynyrd
This one hit different. The first time I heard it, it felt like advice I never got to hear from a father figure. Be something you love and understand. Take your time. Don't live too fast. It grounded me when the world felt out of control and reminded me to focus on character over chaos.
2. "Lose Yourself" – Eminem
When I was hustling through jobs, military training, and trying to climb out of survival mode, this song became my fuel. It reminded me that opportunities don't wait. If you want something, you've got to be ready to take the shot, even when your hands are shaking. I've had plenty of those moments—and this song was playing in the back of my mind every time.
3. "Where the Streets Have No Name" – U2
This one hit during my reflective seasons. The moments when I was trying to figure out what was next. Something about the build-up and freedom in this song made me feel like there was always more to chase—more hope, more purpose, more peace if I was willing to keep moving forward.
4. "My Hero" – Foo Fighters
This track carried me during my military years and after, especially as I started leading others. It reminded me that heroes don't always wear capes or rank. Sometimes they're the quiet ones doing the hard things without recognition. That message helped shape the kind of leader I've worked to become.
5. "Humble and Kind" – Tim McGraw
This one is my reset button. In the noise of business, leadership, and life responsibilities, it reminds me what truly matters. Stay grounded. Help others. Remember where you came from. I play this one on tough days when I need to come back to center.
These songs didn't solve my problems. But they helped me carry the weight. They reminded me that emotions are valid, that struggle is universal, and that movement—forward or otherwise—is still movement.
Everyone's got their own soundtrack. These are just a few of the tracks that helped me survive, build, and lead.
