The One Time I Thought I Was in Trouble… But It Changed My Life

02/12/2025

I was 17 years old, standing on the side of a road in South Texas, stomach in knots, thinking, This is it. I'm in real trouble now.

What landed me there wasn't some elaborate scheme or criminal act. It was a BB gun and a video camera. My brothers and I had been making home videos, something we loved to do back then. We had dreams of becoming filmmakers, storytellers, creators. But in one scene, my younger brother used a BB gun as a prop, and someone in the neighborhood saw us filming and called the police.

Next thing I knew, there were flashing lights, officers asking questions, and me, at 17, being treated like an adult. They gave me a fine for "supplying a minor with a weapon," even though it was just a pellet gun and we were trying to be creative. In that moment, it felt like the world was closing in. I felt shame. Embarrassment. Fear.

But what came after was something I didn't expect. A shift.

See, I didn't grow up with a lot of structure. We moved often. My mom did everything she could, but stability wasn't always something we had. So when this moment happened, it wasn't just a brush with the law. It was a wake-up call.

I realized that no one was going to come fix this for me. No one was going to magically straighten my path. If I wanted something different, something better, I had to step up.

From that moment forward, I took life a lot more seriously. I started applying for jobs, showing up early, and earning everything I could. That summer, I worked as a lifeguard and rode my bike to the waterpark every day because I didn't have a car. I didn't care. I had a mission now.

And that mission eventually led me to the military. I enlisted in the Air Force, determined to find a path with purpose, discipline, and direction. I found it. That decision laid the foundation for the leader, husband, father, and entrepreneur I am today.

It's funny how a moment that felt like a disaster turned into a defining moment. That's the thing about life. What feels like trouble in the moment might just be a turning point in disguise.

Now, when I talk to young people, veterans, or anyone trying to find their way, I share this story. Not because I'm proud of getting in trouble, but because I'm proud of what I did next.

Sometimes the worst day of your week can become the start of the best chapter of your life. You just have to decide to learn from it instead of run from it.

So yeah, I thought I was in trouble.
Turns out, I was just getting ready to grow.
